Some general installation Guidelines for LENRDs:
Start at the ceiling and work your way towards the floor. For example, if you have an 8′ ceiling, the minimum number of LENRDs is two (2) per vertical corner starting from the ceiling and working down 4′. For a 9′ ceiling, you might consider four (4) LENRDs in each corner. In that case, place one (1) at the floor, one (1) at the ceiling and space the other two (2) out in between.
If you don’t have enough space in the vertical corners to use all your LENRDs, you can use them in any horizontal corners (wall/ceiling preferred, but wall/floor is acceptable). If you know this is going to be a problem, consider an ATOM-12 for your room.
If you have a pitched ceiling, it is completely acceptable to start the LENRDs at the top of the wall. Trying to cram them into a non-90° corner is not worth the trouble.
LENRDs are not recommended for vertical corners than are less than or greater than 90°. For bass trapping in acute or obtuse vertical corners, please consider Sunburst Broadband Absorbers. Other installation guidelines would stay the same for Sunbursts.
Some general installation Guidelines for Studiofoam on walls:
In general, start at the ceiling and work your way down. You will want absorptive treatments to be centered at or above ear level on the walls. In most rooms it is not necessary to go lower than your wall outlets with acoustical treatment. In many cramped rooms (lots of gear and furniture), lower than desk or table height is usually unnecessary.
Placement on the walls in Control Rooms is best done in one of three ways:
• Getting specific suggestions from an Auralex Technical Consultant. Contact Us
• Treating around the mix area first, then the rest of the room.
• Similar to above, except using the ”mirror trick” to minimize ”deadness” in the room. View the Product Placement Video for tips and tricks.
You may cut the Studiofoam into any shapes and sizes you wish. Patterns are completely up to you. View the video.
Alignment of the wedges, pyramids, Metro or sawtooth pattern will not affect the acoustical performance. For example, vertical wedges, horizontal wedges, wedges at 45°, or wedges at any angle will all perform equally well.
Studiofoam mounted to a backer board that is furred out from the wall will slightly increase the low frequency performance of the absorber. If you would like to ”tune” this absorber to target a specific low frequency range, Auralex Engineers can provide designs for diaphragmatic absorbers for a very small fee.
Spreading the Studiofoam out in a Live Room, a non-mix area part of a Control Room, or any other non-critical listening application will maximize acoustical benefits. Edge effects from Studiofoam spaced out even a few inches can increase acoustical benefits.
Again, in non-critical listening applications (Live Rooms, Conference Rooms, Gyms, etc.), avoid treating parallel walls with the same pattern. In other words, parallel flat surfaces in the room should be minimized.
